A workshop designed to push your creative boundaries

In a small group of up to five participants, our focus is on learning by doing: after repeating the basics of photography and getting comfortable with our camera we will spend the day experimenting with creative techniques such as double exposures, long exposures, intentional camera movement (ICM), and working with different perspectives, layering, and abstraction. Rather than following a fixed formula, you will be guided to discover approaches that suit your own way of seeing.

The walk combines instruction and practical learning with space for individual exploration. Throughout the day, you will receive personal guidance, creative prompts, and feedback, allowing you to build confidence and develop a more intuitive relationship with your camera.

Is this a workshop for you?

This photography workshop is designed for beginners as well as advanced photographers who want to expand their creative practice. During this workshop you will have the space to go at your own pace. Whether you’re just starting out with your camera or are already a passionate and experienced photographer, this workshop is the perfect opportunity to grow your skills, refine your creative vision and elevate your photography.

What equipment do I need?

Any camera that allows basic manual control can be used. Bring whatever you have and you will be surprised to explore the possibilities. If you have, bring the following: your camera of course, wide-angle, macro, tele lenses, a light tripod, filters, a small flash light or head light. Only what you can carry around for half a day. No prior experience with artistic techniques is required—only curiosity and a willingness to experiment.

By the end of the workshop, you will not only have a collection of expressive images, but also a stronger understanding of how to approach photography as a creative process, using Vancouver’s cherry blossoms as inspiration.

Why choose my workshops?

  • I am a professional nature photographer with over 20 years of experience behind the camera and many years of teaching photography to others. I bought my first DSLR at the age of 16, and since then photography has been a constant part of my life—not just as a craft, but as a way of observing and understanding the natural world.
  • My academic background as a biologist allows me to go beyond composition and camera settings. I can help you understand the ecology, behaviour, and context of your subjects, enabling you to anticipate moments rather than react to them—an essential skill in nature photography.
  • My workshops are focussed around the participants and follow a practical learning by doing approach. I prioritise guidance in real situations instead of taking pictures of my own, except where demonstrations are helpful.
  • Small group sizes ensure plenty of individual attention. This allows me to respond to everyone’s personal questions, skill level, and photographic goals, creating a supportive and relaxed learning environment.
  • My workshops are designed to help you grow your photography, and not only return home with beautiful images but with tools and insights you can apply long after the workshop ends.
