Overview
This is a Pantanal journey like no other. Immerse yourself in the breathtaking world of the largest wetland on Earth — one of the most biodiverse places on the planet — and experience a 12-day expedition filled with wildlife and nature photography. This photo tour takes you not only to the best photography spots in the Pantanal, but also into parts of the Pantanal that remain off-limits to mass tourism. It has been specially designed for photographers who want to capture the diverse wildlife, vast river landscapes, and unique light of the Pantanal, and who want to go jaguar-spotting away from the tourist crowds. Nature-loving non-photographers and partners are, of course, equally welcome.
In a small group of 5 to a maximum of 8 participants, we experience Brazil’s stunning nature, wilderness, and remoteness. We explore the Pantanal both on land and on water. A particular highlight of the trip is a 4-day boat expedition into the heart of the Pantanal — to places very few ever reach, far from the tourist traffic along the Transpantaneira road. From our fully equipped expedition vessel, we explore winding river landscapes with dense gallery forests, sweeping savannas, and crystal-clear rivers. We spend 3.5 days on jaguar safari in one of the most remote and best-protected parts of the Pantanal: the Taiamã Ecological Reserve. This area is home to one of the highest jaguar densities in the Pantanal and in all of South America. Along the way, we also observe and photograph caimans, capybaras, toucans, macaws, and numerous other exotic species.
Under the expert guidance of nature photographer and biologist Uwe Zimmermann, together with Sandro Heusinger — a German guide who lives in the Pantanal himself — this journey takes you to places that remain hidden from most tourists. Our route is planned to offer the highest possible concentration of photographic opportunities and particularly strong chances of authentic encounters with jaguars, giant otters, the rare hyacinth macaw, ospreys, toucans, roseate spoonbills, and a wide variety of other rare species. Thanks to our many years of experience in the Pantanal, we also have the best possible chances of discovering tapirs, giant anteaters, and perhaps even the elusive ocelot.

Itinerary
Day 1 – Arrival in Cuiabá
Your adventure begins in Cuiabá, where you will be picked up from the airport upon arrival and transferred by private shuttle to the Hotel Fazenda Mato Grosso, a 3-star accommodation. The hotel was deliberately chosen for the exceptionally nature-close atmosphere it offers despite being located in a large city.
The property is surrounded by expansive gardens and green spaces that invite you to relax while offering a small taste of the flora and fauna of the Pantanal.
In the evening, we enjoy a shared dinner at a typical Brazilian churrascaria, where various meat specialties are served in the traditional Brazilian style. It’s the perfect opportunity to share first impressions and get into the spirit of the adventures ahead.
Accommodation: Standard room at Hotel Fazenda Mato Grosso Included meals: Dinner
Day 2 – Crystal-Clear Rivers and Macaws in Nobres
After breakfast, we leave our accommodation and head towards Nobres, a region known for its crystal-clear rivers and unique nature experiences. The drive takes approximately two to three hours through the varied landscapes of southern Mato Grosso, until we arrive at our beautifully situated accommodation nestled in the heart of nature.
After arriving, we head straight out for our first major nature experience: snorkeling in one of the region’s glass-clear rivers. The water is so transparent that you can see several dozen meters ahead — almost like a natural aquarium. As we drift gently with the current, we observe an impressive variety of fish, including large schools of colorful piraputangas, pacus, and many other species moving between aquatic plants and sunken tree trunks. Photography here requires a waterproof camera or a GoPro (available for rent on-site), but the experience itself is so extraordinary that you are guaranteed never to forget it.
Afterwards, we return to our accommodation for a shared lunch. There is then some time to rest, enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the lodge, or simply soak in the surrounding nature.
In the early afternoon, we explore the area around the accommodation. With a little luck, we may already spot and photograph our first interesting bird species — including toucans, parakeets, or other typical inhabitants of the region.
At sunset, we drive to the famous Lagoa das Araras. This lagoon is known for a spectacular natural spectacle: at dusk, large numbers of blue-and-yellow macaws return to their roosting spots in the dead palms surrounding the lagoon. Against the golden light of the setting sun, the scene creates a truly unique backdrop — an unforgettable moment for nature lovers and photographers alike.
After this special experience, we return to our accommodation for a shared dinner and a relaxed end to the day.
Accommodation: Standard room at Pousada Reino Encantado Included meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Day 3 – Onward into the Pantanal
At sunrise, we head back to the Lagoa das Araras one more time to experience the spectacle of the colorful parrots in the beautiful morning light. After a leisurely breakfast at the pousada, we set off for the Pantanal (approx. 6 hours), first along paved roads and then along the legendary Transpantaneira toward the Pouso Alegre Lodge. Along the way, there is an opportunity to stop for lunch together (not included) and enjoy the first glimpses of the landscape. Wildlife sightings are also possible during the drive. Arrival at the lodge is planned for around 4:00 PM.
The drive to the lodge is itself a first safari along the legendary Transpantaneira.
The lodge at Pouso Alegre is a simple but deeply nature-connected accommodation, particularly well known for its outstanding location for wildlife observation.
It is precisely this unspoiled setting that makes it an ideal base for nature and wildlife photography in the Pantanal. A dedicated safari vehicle is available for excursions, and we will head out for a first safari shortly after our arrival.
After dinner, we embark on a night safari, during which — with a little luck — nocturnal animals such as ocelots, foxes, and other Pantanal inhabitants may be spotted.
Accommodation: Standard room at Pouso Alegre Lodge Included meals: Breakfast, dinner
Days 4–5 – Safari Experiences in the Pantanal
We spend the next two days in the fascinating surroundings of the Pouso Alegre Lodge.
Each day begins with a walking safari, allowing us to experience nature in its most immediate form. Under the guidance of experienced guides, we move carefully through the landscape, listening to the sounds of the Pantanal and watching for animals in close proximity. This direct experience makes it possible to observe flora and fauna up close and capture unique, authentic photographs.
In the afternoon, we continue our exploration with a safari in the off-road vehicle, venturing further afield. Stops at waterholes are a particular highlight, where we can observe and photograph animals drinking, hunting, or simply going about their natural behavior. Here we have the special opportunity to sit quietly at the waterholes and capture intimate, undisturbed moments — from rare birds to caimans, capybaras, and with some luck even tapirs. Patience and stillness are richly rewarded here.
Lunch is always taken back at the lodge, leaving plenty of time to rest, reflect on the morning’s impressions, and review the best photos. This creates space to let the experiences sink in before the next safari begins.
Accommodation: Standard room at Pouso Alegre Lodge Included meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Day 6 – Onwards to Pousada Rio Claro
After breakfast, we take one last safari around the Pouso Alegre Lodge.
After checking out, we head to the Pousada Rio Claro, a charming 3-star accommodation in a wonderful setting on the Rio Claro. We chose this property because it offers a contrast to the purely land-based program at Pouso Alegre. Here, a smaller river of the Pantanal system meets the savanna, which shapes both the landscape and the wildlife found here.
The area around the lodge also offers excellent chances of encountering hyacinth macaws.
Arrival is planned for the early afternoon, leaving enough time to explore the property and take a short rest.
In the afternoon, we set out on a guided walking tour through the surrounding area, exploring the banks of the Rio Claro, gallery forests, and typical Pantanal landscapes, observing the diverse flora and fauna and making our first encounters with wildlife that tend to stay close to the river.
In the evening, a night safari by off-road vehicle awaits us, during which we can observe nocturnal animals. With some luck, we may discover a southern tamandua, armadillos, or other nocturnal Pantanal residents going about their nighttime activities — an exciting adventure that rounds off the day perfectly.
Accommodation: Premium room at Pousada Rio Claro Included meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Day 7 – Rio Claro: Wildlife Encounters on the River
Today we experience an immersive day in the fascinating surroundings of Rio Claro, known for its rivers, gallery forests, and the rich wildlife of the Pantanal.
The day begins with a morning boat excursion. Our boat glides gently along the calm waterways, past dense gallery forests and open lagoons. Under the guidance of experienced guides, we have the opportunity to observe numerous animals in their natural environment: caimans basking on the banks, capybaras moving leisurely along the water’s edge, and water birds, toucans, ospreys, and other raptors offering colorful photographic subjects. The morning light lends the landscape a special quality, opening up countless possibilities for striking nature and wildlife photography.
After returning to the pousada, there is time to rest, review photos, and enjoy a light lunch before we head out again in the afternoon.
The second boat excursion in the afternoon takes us out during the golden evening hours. Animals become particularly active at this time, and we can observe the behavior of crepuscular and more elusive species. Caimans emerge from the water to bask, while birds search for food or settle in for the night.
The warm light of the setting sun bathes the river landscapes in a magical atmosphere, ideal for both landscape photography and wildlife shots. This excursion offers the chance to experience the diversity of the Pantanal from a different perspective and capture truly special moments.
In this way, we experience Rio Claro in all its richness over a single day — on the water, in harmony with nature, and in ever-changing light — gathering unforgettable memories of the wildlife and the unique landscape of the Pantanal.
Accommodation: Premium room at Pousada Rio Claro Included meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Day 8 – The River Expedition Begins
The day starts early with a sunrise safari, making use of the first rays of light to observe and photograph the Pantanal’s wildlife in the still of the morning.
After a relaxed breakfast, we leave the Pousada Rio Claro and drive to Cáceres, the starting point for the extraordinary highlight of our trip: an exclusive expedition cruise into one of the most remote jaguar regions of the Pantanal.
This expedition takes place aboard our own expedition vessel, which carries us down the Rio Paraguai deep into the western Pantanal. The ship serves as the comfortable base for our journey, taking us step by step further into one of the most pristine regions of the Pantanal.
From the ship, we undertake our daily safari excursions using smaller side boats, which allow us to penetrate narrow tributaries, channels, and lagoons that are unreachable for larger vessels. While our ship slowly navigates further through the Pantanal, we explore the surrounding waterways from these smaller boats, actively searching for wildlife — with a particular focus on jaguar sightings.
We have deliberately chosen not to run this expedition in the heavily trafficked region around Porto Jofre along the Transpantaneira road. At peak times, that area can see 20 to 30 boats simultaneously surrounding a single jaguar — a situation that, in our view, is neither acceptable for the animals nor conducive to an authentic nature experience.
Instead, we operate in the western Pantanal, a significantly more pristine and less visited region. Through our many years of experience in this area, we have learned to successfully track jaguars here too. In fact, on all of our tours in 2025, we observed a minimum of 2 jaguars in this region.
In the early afternoon, we arrive in Cáceres and board our expedition ship. Once we have settled into our cabins, we head out for our first exploratory excursion by side boat along the surrounding river channels of the Rio Paraguai, getting a first impression of the remarkable wildlife and the vast, untouched landscape of the Pantanal.
After returning on board, we enjoy our first shared dinner on the ship as we slowly make our way deeper into the Pantanal and prepare ourselves for the days of expedition ahead.
Accommodation: Private cabin on the expedition ship Included meals: Breakfast, dinner
Days 9–11 – Three-Day River Expedition on the Trail of the Jaguar
The next three days are dedicated entirely to our river expedition aboard our private vessel, as we venture step by step deeper into the remote water landscapes of the western Pantanal. This part of the Pantanal lies far from well-traveled tourist routes, and very few people ever get to see it.
As our ship slowly makes its way down the Rio Paraguai, we enter increasingly unspoiled regions of this unique ecosystem.
A central focus of our expedition is the area around the Taiamã Reserve. Scientific studies indicate that this region is home to one of the highest jaguar densities in the entire Pantanal. In the waters and riverbanks surrounding this protected area, we search for jaguars and other wildlife.
Our chalana — as these vessels are known in the Pantanal — serves as the floating base of the expedition. From here, we set out multiple times each day in our smaller side boats for safari excursions, reaching narrow tributaries, lagoons, and channels where wildlife is particularly frequently observed.
As our ship continues to navigate slowly through the Pantanal landscape, we explore the surrounding area by side boat, always searching for jaguars, giant otters, caimans, and an impressive diversity and abundance of bird species. With some luck, we may even encounter jaguars directly from our chalana.
Between excursions, we return to the ship, where breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served on board. Throughout the entire journey, the chalana remains our quiet retreat and at the same time the mobile platform from which we explore the Pantanal.
Each day brings new perspectives and wildlife encounters — from the gentle morning light to the warm colors of dusk. These are intense days filled with nature observation, discovery, and extraordinary photographic opportunities in one of the most wildlife-rich regions of South America.
Accommodation: Private cabin on the expedition ship Included meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Day 12 – Return to Cuiabá
On the final morning, after breakfast, we leave the chalana and begin the journey back to Cuiabá. The drive takes approximately 4 to 5 hours and leads us through the wide, open expanses of the Pantanal, past lush lagoons, reed beds, and riverbanks where birds, caimans, and other animals can still be spotted along the way.
En route, we stop at special viewpoints to take in the landscape one last time in all its diversity and capture a few final photographs. The tranquility of the Pantanal, the reflections on the water, and the familiar sounds of nature accompany us during the drive, allowing the impressions of the past days to wash over us one more time.
In the afternoon, we finally arrive in Cuiabá, where we are transferred directly to the airport. The return marks the end of our unforgettable river expedition — rich in nature experiences, wildlife encounters, and unique photographic moments that will stay with us for a long time to come.

Ethical Jaguar Safari
Jaguar safari has become something of a competitive sport in the Pantanal in recent years. In Porto Jofre, the epicenter of jaguar tourism, the density of boats has reached a point where a single animal is often surrounded by as many as 20 or 30 vessels at once. This not only diminishes the nature experience for guests — who frequently imagined it would be very different — but also has a real impact on the local ecosystem. Vegetation is destroyed, riverbanks are eroded by the bow waves of speedboats, and species such as the giant otter are driven away.
This trip is different. Drawing on many years of experience in the Pantanal, we have designed a boat expedition that takes us to a different, remote part of the Pantanal: the Taiamã Nature Reserve. Not only does this area have one of the highest jaguar densities in the entire Pantanal, but in all likelihood we will be the only ones present when observing the animals. This allows us to watch and photograph them ethically, respectfully, and without disturbance, in their natural behavior. Because that is the mission and the purpose of this trip: authentic and deeply moving wildlife encounters and nature experiences that will stay with you forever.
Your tour guides
This photo tour is led by Sandro Heusinger, a German guide who lives in the Pantanal himself and Uwe Zimmermann, a German biologist, nature photographer and filmmaker.
Local tour guide Sandro Heusinger emigrated to Brazil years ago and lives in Cáceres, a small town on the edge of the Pantanal. He has been leading tours into the most varied parts of the Pantanal for many years, knows the region inside out, and has an extraordinary depth of knowledge of the exotic local fauna and flora.
Uwe Zimmermann’s images and films have been recognised in several international awards and have been featured in local exhibitions. Based in his adopted home of Vancouver, Canada, he regularly offers photography workshops and takes great joy in sharing his passion for the beauty of nature through photography with others. He is always in search of the next compelling subject and the next photographic challenge.
The hands-on guidance while photographing out in the field — not in a seminar room, but outside where images are actually made — will transform your photography too. The topics we explore together are as varied as the situations themselves: How do I compose a powerful image? When is it worth looking more carefully? And how do I get the camera to capture what I see in front of me — whether through smart autofocus settings or full manual control? At every location, we take time with you personally to look at where your next photographic steps might lead — from image composition and camera settings to storytelling and creative techniques such as long exposure and ICM (intentional camera movement).
